This wildflower photo of the Pink Lady's-Slipper orchid, or Moccasin-Flower, (Cypripedium acaule) was made along the trail to Au Sable Point in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on Michigan's Upper Peninsula in June 2004.
The heavily veined, deeply cleft pouch of this wild orchid is a distinctive characteristic of this species. In this photo, water drops from recent rains hang from the bottom of the flower's pouch. The succulent late spring growth contrasts nicely with the brown dead leaves on the forest floor and the showy pink flower.
Photo location: Au Sable Point, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Alger County, Michigan.
