Spreading Phlox, South Kaibab Trail, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

Hiking the South Kaibab Trail below Grand Canyon's South Rim in early May, I hit the brakes to photograph a lovely clump of Spreading Phlox at trailside.

With bright early morning sun above, the shade of the canyon cliff made for soft, diffused light in its shadow. Deep green plant leaves growing out from a tumble of canyon stones. Blue to violet five petaled flowers designed to attract pollinating insects. An appreciation of the harsh beauty of the desert environment at Grand Canyon.

Photo location: South Kaibab Trail, South Rim, Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona.
