Zigzag Falls Waterfall,
Quehanna Wild Area, Pennsylvania
Like most spots on small mountain streams I photograph, "Zigzag Falls" is a made-up name, a description that came to mind so I could distinguish this section of stream from the others. This is in the Quehanna Wild Area up on the Allegheny Plateau, Pennsylvania.
Shadows of forest trees and wild rhododendron fall across the pristine rushing waters and moss covered boulders. This stream is large enough to be home to a few native brook trout.
This nameless forest brook is a favorite of mine: secluded, shady, clean and cold. Huge sandstone boulders fill the flood plain and nearby steep valley sides. A mature forest canopy of birch and maple, along with the steepness and narrowness of the slopes, makes this spot shady almost all day long. In this photograph the morning sun is hitting the falls, but it won't be in this position for long.
