Trees and Forests Photo Gallery celebrates the diversity and wonder of the deciduous and coniferous trees and forests across America. Photographs of aspen, pine, and Douglas-fir stands in Colorado, along with maples and oaks in Ohio and Pennsylvania, comprise this collection.
With a degree in forestry and having spent 14 years as a professional forester, trees have always been close to my heart. An individual tree, whether living in a wilderness, a forest, a park, or a yard, can provide a never ending study. A forest provides constant wonder both through the endless variety of shapes and forms, but also as prime wildlife habitat of many kinds. Providers of shade and beauty, producers of oxygen, anchors of soil, homes for birds, mammals, and insects.
The deciduous ("hardwood") tree species annually provide the full range of showy growth, from joyous spring bud break and flowering, to summer foliage shade and leaves waving in the breeze, to the autumn splendor of brilliant, colorful dying leaves, and finally elegant bare form through winter. Meanwhile, the evergreen (in most species) needles of conifers provide roosting places for the birds year yound, and provide dark green foliage when the deciduous trees are bare.
