Sugar Maple Autumn Colors,
Allegheny Plateau, Pennsylvania
This photograph of a large sugar maple approaching its peak autumn color was made near Clearfield, Pennsylvania.
I was born and raised in this region of the state, and I get back there often. On this particular trip, I missed the peak of the fall foliage in that area by one day. A cold front had come through the night before, the wind and rain knocking down most of the leaves.
Since individual trees lose their leaves at different times, there was still plenty of color to photograph, including the leaves freshly on the ground. Overcast days can be great for photographing fall foliage, especially if the leaves are wet. The water saturates their colors, and the softer shadows allow for more detail.
