Osage-orange Trees, Fall

Some days should last forever. For me that is a description of autumn. I just want it to last and last. But it can't, of course. If it was always around I would become jaded. It would be the norm instead of that exquisitely fleeting time of the year that stirs my soul, makes my pulse race, makes me sigh with the awe of being alive.

September and October in North America is the time of Indian Summer. I don't know where the term originated. I suppose I could look it up, but the official definition means little. It's the reality that counts.

The sunny warm days, the low humidity that makes distant scenes look like they're being viewed through polished glass, the crisp cool nights devoid of the noisy air conditioner running, the brilliant fall foliage. Yeah. That's what it's all about. For me, at least.

This photo portrays what I feel about fall. Incredible mountain vistas at this time of year are awesome, but when push comes to shove all you need is a tree. A tree against a clear blue sky, showing off its fall colors as it slowly gets ready for yet another winter.

Does this tree appreciate its life as much as I do? I don't know. I can only wonder. I can only trust that it does. That it speaks to me in its own way, that it soothes my soul just by being. Morning sunshine illuminating its yellow autumn leaves, high above its massive trunks and delicate branches and twigs.

Trees are my friends. Any tree. They give us so much. We are here to take care of them as best we can.
