![]() Sugar Maple Seedlings, Fall ColorsThis photograph of sugar maple seedlings was made at Hueston Woods State Park in southwest Ohio. It's interesting to note that the outermost leaves look to be turning colors first, while the inner leaves are still mostly green. The Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum), also called hard maple or rock maple, is one of our most valuable trees. Slow growing and relatively shade tolerant, the hard wood makes excellent flooring and furniture. The sap, of course, is still commercially used to make maple syrup in the northeastern United States and eastern Canada. Some people call a grove of sugar maple trees "sugar bush".
