Sugar Maple Fall Foliage,
Sunlit Crown, Ohio
Sugar maple trees are the epitome of the fall foliage season throughout most of the eastern United States and Canada. These valuable, hardy, slow growing deciduous trees are some of the last to leaf out in the spring. In the fall, they are also some of the last to turn color and shed their leaves in preparation for the long winter's dormancy.
Sugar maples are the swan song of autumn. Long after most of the other hardwood trees are bare, many sugar maples are only reaching the peak of their colors. Thus they command the spotlight, glowing against the browns and grays of their forest bretheren.
In this photo, I had worked my way underneath this small but lovely tree. The angle of the light makes all the difference. Move a few feet one way or the other, and the effect is very different. What a pleasant exploration is possible by merely looking, feeling, experiencing the glory of nature.
