Redwall Cavern in Grand Canyon's Marble Canyon section is only accessible by boat from the Colorado River. Its name comes from the fact that it's been eroded out of the spectacular Redwall limestone formation in Grand Canyon's immense hierarchy of rock layer groups.
In this photo, the afternoon sunlight is glowing fiery orange off the cliff face across the river, helping to subtly light up the cavern. People standing near the entrance give it a sense of scale.
When Major John Wesley Powell made the first American river trip down through Grand Canyon in the 1800's, he wrote that this yawning cavern could hold 50,000 people. He was off by probably a factor of 10; certainly about 1,000 could.
At any rate, it was a pleasure to step off the boat onto the silky smooth sandy beach and walk inside. The late afternoon sun was reflecting off the canyon walls outside, lighting them red, yellow, and orange. I made a series of overlapping wide angle photos and assembled them into a single high resolution image.
Then it was time to get back on the boat and make our way to our camp.
