This photograph of the sun rising over the Hocking Hills was taken from the Ash Cave Fire Lookout Tower in Hocking State Forest, near Hocking Hills State Park.
The Hocking Hills are foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in southeast Ohio. Probably no other area of the state is so wild and picturesque. The Hocking region is known for its massive sandstone outcroppings and cliffs, cool deep gorges, dark hemlock trees, and tumbling waterfalls.
The location of the Ash Cave Fire Tower is not indicated on the highway, but it's only a short walk from a gravel parking lot. The Buckeye Trail passes right by it. Fortunately, you can still climb the tower, although you can't get inside the actual lookout room.
Photo location: Between Cedar Falls and Ash Cave units of Hocking Hills State Park, Hocking County, Ohio.
