Bracken Fern in Fall,
Tahquamenon Falls State Park, Michigan
This photograph of the dying fronds of Bracken Fern (Pteridium aquilinum) was made on a rainy fall day in Tahquamenon Falls State Park on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The wet weather helped to saturate the colors of the vegetation.
The Latin name for Bracken Fern means "eagle-like fern", referring to the large, broad fronds that resemble eagle's wings. Being a deciduous fern, the fronds are killed by frost each fall, forming a mat that insulates the underground rhizomes from frost kill in case there isn't any snow cover during cold weather.
