Autumn Sunset, Poplar Run,
Montgomery County, Ohio
A late autumn afternoon slowly swung into early evening across a harvested soybean field in southwest Ohio. The snaking band of trees that defined the tiny brook named Poplar Run began to glow golden in the low sunlight.
The tallest trees -- ash -- dropped their leaves early, as always. Along with the black walnut trees in there. So it was time for the main event: the Osage-orange ("hedgeapple"), the hackberries, the honeylocusts.
In this photo, the remaining leaved trees glow yellow in their splendor, seemingly exhalting the glory of a still, warm, clear, sunny late Indian Summer afternoon. Meanwhile, the still green brush at ground line belongs to the bush honeysuckle (an invader), and whatever else manages to survive alongside it and under the shade of the big trees.
