Mayapple Leaf, Spring,
Germantown MetroPark, Ohio
This photograph of a Mayapple leaf in spring was made at Germantown MetroPark in southwest Ohio. Spring raindrops lie beaded up on the waxy surface of its large, deep green leaves. Each plant has just two umbrella-shaped leaves that may be up to a foot in diameter.
The Mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum) often grows in colonies in rich woodlands in the eastern U.S. and Canada. Its common name comes from its blossoming in the month of May, and that its single white flower looks like an apple blossom.
