Scallop Fisherman, Madaket Town Pier,
Nantucket Island
I was back on the island for my baby sister's wedding. This time I flew in, because it was a short trip. Unfortunately. I love this place, and I hate to leave.
I was the guest of the Captain and his wife, at their lovely home overlooking Hither Creek, a salt water arm of Madaket Harbor at the west end of the island. Naturally I wasted no time in heading down to the harbor for possible photographs.
I was in luck this blustery December morning. A scallop fisherman was pulling up to the Madaket Town Pier, with his catch of fresh bay scallops. "New York Times?" he kidded, upon seeing my camera gear. "Yeah, right", I said, grinning back. As a final silly flourish, he decorated his catch with the bright red Coca-Cola can. He was a typical hardworking, cheerful, New England fisherman. There is something about the beauty and dangers of working on the sea that seems to produce such people.
