Nantucket Island and Cape Cod Photos Gallery
Nantucket Photos Gallery explores the evocative range of light found on the little island of Nantucket, thirty miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. A carefully balanced blend of historic, traditional, and modern values is seen in the architecture and lifestyles here. Pristine sandy beaches, harbors, surf, moors, pine and oak forest, freshwater and saltwater ponds, lighthouses, and of course boats are all found in close proximity to each other.

Here we explore the enchanted island nicknamed the Gray Lady, due to the frequent fogs that envelope this graceful, slender spit of sand and rock. Thirty miles at sea in the North Atlantic, Nantucket Island captures the imagination today as much as it did in Herman Melville's time, only in different ways.
Called 'The Rock' by locals, it's a 20-mile-long spit of ever-shifting sand. The outermost pile of debris left by retreating Ice Age glaciers (like Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod), Nantucket is constantly pounded by the sea and the wind. You certainly can't get there by accident. Unless you have your own boat, and have the experience to get it there safely, you either need to fly in or take the ferry from Hyannis, a ride of over two hours.
Nantucket is Native American for "faraway land", and it certainly does live in its own time and space. A charming, rugged, quaint, historic, fascinating place. For some, the lure is the solitude, although these days you'll have to be there in the offseason for that. For others, it's the culture, the history, and the amenities. For all, it's the fresh, wild sea air, pounding surf, and glorious sunrises and sunsets.
