Nantucket Harborfront Sunrise,

During a season when I worked as Mate on a Nantucket charter fishing boat, I would steal down to the harbor in town every morning that we didn't have a trip booked. In other words, I was unpaid for the day, free to explore as I might.
The Nantucket harbor front is always a treasure trove of photographs. The water, the boats, the buildings crowding the sea's edge. The sun rises over the mighty North Atlantic ocean, lighting up the shake shingles of the shops and cottages built on pilings sunk into the harbor.
Many mornings I've huddled here in the dawn, with a thermos of coffee awaiting the warming sunrise. Heart, soul, eyes, camera. Experience and expression.
Nantucket is a dream to most visitors. I, fortunately, knew mostly her underbelly: the fishermen and school teachers and shop keepers. Wonderful people who are very quick to lend a helping hand.
The edges of civilization tend to breed such people. It's no wonder that I'm drawn to such places. Real people, real life. Cold sea and snug warm houses. Culture and nature wrapped into a Thanksgiving feast.
