Foggy Harbor Scene, (The Gray Lady)
Easy Street Boat Basin, Nantucket
An early morning down on the harbor front in Nantucket town. The island is nicknamed "The Gray Lady" for the foggy conditions that often shroud it.
This photo is of boats moored in the Easy Street Boat Basin, with Old North Wharf in the distance.
Dense fog can be a deadly hazard to those traveling in boat, plane, or car. To the naturalist on foot, however, it can be soothing, mysterious, intriguing. When the breeze is slight or nonexistent, colors are rich and saturated when up close, and the ethereal quality lent to distant objects makes the flat photograph seem deep and three dimensional. Water can be calm and almost perfectly reflective, like a sky below the one above. Noises are muffled, adding to the peaceful feeling.
