The season that I was a Mate on a charter fishing boat on Nantucket, I would make use of those days when we had no trips scheduled by getting up early and combing the island in search of photos. Even on such a small, flat island there is an incredible wealth of subjects and places to explore. A favorite of course was the main harbor at the heart of town, on the relatively protected north side of the island.
This photograph was made on such a morning. In this case it was calm, clear, and relatively warm. The moored boats rocked gently in the slight breeze, the sky beginning to glow red, orange, and yellow at the horizon as the sun made its approach from below, way out over the Atlantic to the east.
One more morning; may there always be one more. I turned my camera on its side on the tripod, composing the sky to fill three-fourths of the image, capturing the soft gradations from red to blue-black. The boats are sleeping black silhouettes on the softly undulating water.
Photo location: Nantucket Harbor, Nantucket Island, Massachusetts.
