Just after sunset on a splendid June evening I boarded the ferry to Nantucket Island. Last boat of the day. Normally I would have waited until morning to take the ferry, so as to avoid missing the sights of crossing the ocean and approaching Nantucket and entering the harbor there. But someone was waiting for me on the island, ready to show me the way to the vacation house in which I would be staying. It was more convenient for him to get it out of the way in the evening, and I was grateful. So on the boat I went. There would be plenty of time for photography in the morning. And in the afternoon, the evening, the next days to come.
Getting out of my truck and going above deck, I enjoyed the height vantage to look all around. All those expensive houses crowded down onto the shore. Who lived in them, and what were they doing this evening? Doubtless they are comfortably jaded to seeing the ferry boats come and go. I would be too, I'm afraid; you get used to whatever is around you routinely. But what great sights to get so used to. How fortunate.
In this image, the tall clouds provide a willing movie screen to catch the colors of the setting sun, now below the horizon. Set against the blue sky above and the developing fog below, they reflect onto the placid waters of the harbor in the foreground. Everything seemed so peaceful. And it was. All I had to do now was kick back and leave the driving to the ferry captain.
