On a blustery December afternoon, I walked out to the beach at Quidnet, on the eastern edge of Nantucket Island. It is deserted, and I seem to have the view out to sea all to myself, under pensive skies of heavy clouds with occasional breaks of blue, and even a bit of sun now and then.
In this photo, the relentless winds, the ever-shifting sands, and the salt air the pressure both on the vegetation, and on the weathered fences meant to help stabilize the dunes.
The sun partially emerges to add some highlights and soft shadows, then it's gone again. The grasses and shrubs are dormant until spring. I am not, however, being restless as the sands.
