Sunset, Dome Mountain,
Cabinet Wilderness, Montana

We had backpacked into Upper Cedar Lake at the base of Dome Mountain in the Cabinet Wilderness in northwest Montana. It was September, and an early snowfall dumped on us. Not deep enough to worry about, but plenty to cloak the mountains and their flanks with beautiful white.

A day hike to the top of Dome Mountain in the late afternoon had us in position for a fiery sunset through the breaking clouds. We were far from camp and had no flashlights, but the snow lit up the darkness enough so that we could follow our tracks back down the trail to camp and a much needed hot supper.
