Tawas Point Lighthouse, Exterior Restoration,
Lake Huron, Michigan
This photo of the restoration work being applied to the exterior of the Tawas Point Lighthouse near Tawas City, Michigan, was made on June 28, 2003.
Tawas Point State Park is a unique and rich natural area located about halfway up Michigan's Lower Peninsula on the Lake Huron shore. The lighthouse is owned by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, which was in the process of spending $105,000 to restore the stately old lighthouse, originally built in 1876.
In this photo, a private contractor has scaffolding erected around the tower, so as to spray on a mixture of lime and sand. This new skin is more historically accurate than the coatings of paint that had been applied in recent eras, and also allows the tower's bricks to expand and contract naturally with changes in the temperature.
