Photographic Approach
Steve Krieg is a dedicated artist of landscape photos, a naturalist, and an environmentalist with a solid grounding in the biological sciences, primarily through his degree and experience in forestry and countless wilderness miles with a backpack on his shoulders. For him, photography still evokes the original meaning of the word: "drawing with light." As Edward Weston said, "Light forms the image." It forms the image in the mind and heart and hands of a master photographer. And as Ansel Adams was fond of saying, "The negative is the score; the print is the performance." In this age of electronic 'film' and digital photography and giclee printing, the fundamentals hold as true as ever. Black & white photography allows us to appreciate many details that we miss when distracted by the vibrant colors of our natural vision. In this way it helps us to look further, wonder more, and feel more deeply.
In black and white photos, dark tones form an underlying velvety base from which the middle tones and high tones shine and shimmer. Light reflects from stone walls and cliffs, spreads and diffuses to fill shadows with detail, or illuminates water and ice.
