This photo of the Grand Tetons was made in the early summer of 1984 from the Snake River Overlook in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming.
The Snake River meanders swiftly and mightily in the middle ground, while the Tetons rise abruptly from the high, sagebrush covered plain of Jackson Hole.
It was a perfectly clear summer morning in the high Rocky Mountains. The current season's green growth was only then beginning, as evidenced by the aspen and cottonwood trees down on the floodplain of the river, which were only leafing out at the time.
The Snake River itself rushed past, colored by spring runoff from the higher country. In the far distance, the alpine peaks of the Tetons hold their snowpack for another month or more.
