Zigzag Falls, Winter, Allegheny Plateau, Pennsylvania

Zigzag Falls is a gorgeous little forest waterfall located in an unnamed watershed near the summit of the Quehanna Wild Area on the Elk State Forest in northwestern Pennsylvania. I call this waterfall "Zigzag" because of the way the rock ledges and boulders throw the water from side to side as it rushes downstream.

As with many of the secluded hollows in this area, this little brook is shady and cool year around, sheltered by steep hillsides, giant boulders, and deep forest. It's a great place to escape the crowds and experience solitude and nature, which is why I give many of my secret spots nicknames. I am a native of this area, and want to educate others to nature's powerful beauty without loving it to death.

This image was made on 4x5 inch black and white sheet film.

Photo location: Quehanna Wild Area, Pennsylvania Wilds, Elk and Cameron Counties, Pennsylvania.
