Heceta House Lightkeeper's Quarters,
Heceta Head Lighthouse, Oregon Coast
The Heceta Head lighthouse on the southern Oregon coast is without a doubt one of the most awesome in the world. Built on a sheer cliff of solid balsaltic rock, it has been casting its powerful beam out over the pounding surf 205 feet above the Pacific Ocean day and night since 1894.
This photograph of Heceta House, which was the original lighthouse keeper's house, was made in 1991 while I was working as a forester for the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians up the coast at Siletz, Oregon. Made on black and white 4x5 inch sheet film, the house is bathed in bright but soft sunlight, accentuating the architecture and casting intriguing shadows on the porch and under the eaves.
