Cantwell Cliffs Path,
Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio
The Cantwell Cliffs area of Hocking Hills State Park in the Appalachian foothills of southeastern Ohio is relatively remote compared to other sections of the park, but is spectacularly scenic. This photo was made at the top of the west end of the trail system, at a slot between two large slump blocks of Blackhand sandstone that long ago fell away from the main cliff.
Below the cliff rim in the background lies the deep valley and steep cliffs eroded over the eons by Buck Run. Except during dry periods, small streams drop off the sheer edges to form elegant and wondrous waterfalls, constantly slapping onto the hard rock below.
This photograph was made from a 35mm negative in 1995, then scanned and optimized for Web presentation.
