Hemlock and Beech Trunks, South Rim,
Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio
A late fall hike along the South Rim trail in the Old Man's Cave unit of Hocking Hills State Park in the Appalachian foothills of southeast Ohio. The day was cool, but the sun was bright and warm.
I came across a slight break in the dense tree cover, where I could peer out over the edge of the sandstone cliff. Two tree trunks attracted my attention: on small, one large. One with dark ridge-and-furrow bark and gnarled branches, the other with pebbly-smooth light gray bark, almost branch-free.
Hemlock and beech. Behind them, the dark green needle foliage of the hemlocks were backlit by the warm autumn sun. Further below was the deep black shade of the canyon floor.
