Ponderosa Pine Foliage and Hoar Frost, Arizona

This photo is available as:
- a Stock Image

On a late January morning walk in the Kaibab National Forest in northern Arizona, I savored the bright light on the hoar frost coated Ponderosa pine needles.

Hoar frost forms when it's moist enough, cold enough, and calm enough at night. In this photo, the frost-tinged green needles seem to be exploding like fireworks.

Photo location: Pittman Valley, Coconino County, Kaibab National Forest, between Flagstaff and Williams, Arizona.
