Walking along a sleepy stretch of historic Route 66 on a frosty winter morning, the sunrise colors had the bands of clouds to the south lit up in shades of gold and yellow.
A group of leafless cottonwood trees provided the silhouette, their bare trunks and branches spreading vase-like in the still dawn.
