After a week of heavy snow storms, the skies finally cleared and I went exploring the nearby valley at sunrise. The air was cold and still, the skies blue once again. Everything was shrouded in white, even the pines in the distance. The sun came up and lit the scene from the southeast, for it was late January. The dead of winter. Though it wasn't dead to me.
In this image, an old house of hand-hewn logs has been left to the elements as a barn for horses. In front are water tanks and a small well house. In the background is Sitgreaves Mountain on the Kaibab National Forest, a lumpy series of forested old lava domes.
Photo location: Pittman Valley, between Flagstaff and Williams, Coconino County, northern Arizona.
