Kaibab Lake on the Kaibab National Forest in northern Arizona is kept well stocked with trout by the Arizona Department of Game and Fish. Surrounded by Ponderosa pine forest, it attracts a lot of birds of prey, including Osprey and Bald Eagles.
Kaibab Lake is also a popular recreation area for boating, camping, and of course fishing. It's a prime nesting area for the big birds of prey, which are protected from hunting. The frequent human activity allows one to get fairly close to some of these nests without unduly disturbing the birds.
In this photo, one of the nesting pair is about to alight on one of the dead branches of the tall Ponderosa pine snag at the top of which they have built their nest.
Photo location: Kaibab Lake, Kaibab National Forest, Coconino County, near Williams, Arizona.
